Darien is a coastal town in Fairfield County, located 37 miles northeast of New York City. Even though it is the smallest town in the “Gold Coast” of Connecticut, Dairen has the youngest population of any non-college town in Connecticut. Dairen has a high rate a marriage and children per household and is also one of the wealthiest communities in the United States.
The name Darien was decided upon when the residents of the town could not agree on a name to replace Middlesex Parish. Isthmus of Darien, a sailor a part of the Spanish Empire, suggested the name Darien, which was eventually adopted by the people of the town. The town name is pronounced “Dairy-Ann”, has been referred to as such at least as far back as 1913. Darien remained a small, rural community of about 1,000 until the advent of the railroad. The town became one of the many resorts where New Yorkers built grand, luxurious summer homes after the Civil War.
There are many restaurants & coffee shops for your enjoyment. Dairen also boasts eleven parks, two public beaches, boat clubs, three country clubs including the first organized golf club in Connecticut, a for you and the family to enjoy in Darien. The public schools are highly rated.
